Myopia , or nearsightedness, worsens over time and increases your child’s risk of developing sight-threatening eye diseases later in life. Dr. Ralph Baker, O.D., has more than 35 years of experience helping families understand and manage changes in their child’s vision. Treating Myopia at Granite Pointe Eye Care

Our optometrists provide ongoing care to manage your child’s myopia and limit its progression. Using specialty lenses and other evidence-based options, including specialty eyewear, we aim to slow myopia progression and reduce associated long-term risk.

What is Myopia?

Myopia is a condition where distant objects appear blurry while near vision remains clear. It typically develops in childhood and can continue to worsen through the teenage years.

As myopia progresses, the eye grows longer. Higher levels of myopia are associated with an increased risk of eye health conditions later in life, which is why early management matters.

Myopia Management Options

We have tried and true myopia management options and cutting-edge technology to help keep your child’s vision on point. Our friendly and experienced team take the time to learn about your child’s eyes, health, and lifestyle to provide customized solutions from a variety of myopia management options.

MiSight

MiSight®

MiSight® 1 day contact lenses are for children ages 8 to 12 at the start of treatment and are FDA-approved to slow the progression of myopia. They feature a dual-focus optical design that corrects vision while providing myopia control.

MiSight® lenses are designed to help slow myopia progression while also helping your child see clearly during the day, reducing the need for additional eyewear (in some cases, backup eyewear may still be recommended).

Introducing Essilor® Stellest® Lenses

Essilor®️ Stellest®️ lenses are FDA-market-authorized spectacle lenses to slow myopia progression in children and may help reduce risks associated with higher levels of myopia later in life. The younger a child develops nearsightedness, the further it evolves and the stronger it becomes. You can correct and slow your child’s myopia progression with Essilor®️ Stellest®️ lenses.

Atropine eye drops

Atropine Eye Drops

Low-dose atropine eye drops may be prescribed off-label for selected children to help slow myopia progression. Potential benefits, risks, and the need for ongoing monitoring should be discussed with an optometrist. These eye drops are administered at night and work by relaxing your child’s eye muscles that often get stressed by myopia. In some cases, the optometrist may recommend atropine alone or in combination with another myopia-management option.

Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT) with Ortho-K

We use ortho-k contact lenses for Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT) to allow your child to have great vision during the day without relying on eyewear. Ortho-K lenses are worn while your child sleeps and designed to gently reshape their cornea, so they wake with clearer vision when they take their contacts out! These lenses slow myopia’s development, and are ideal for kids who play contact sports or don’t want daily eyewear. CRT lenses are not just for kids but also adults who want another option or are not qualified for refractive surgery.
